Membership

Organizational Structure (2015):

Open Allocation/Decentralized. Anyone can initiate Projects within the scope of CIG’s mission as long as at least 2 supporting participating members join the team and 2 board members approve of the mission/project/initiative. The projects must have defined milestones, timeline, and success measures.

Member Categories:

The Executive Board

Board members – Initiating members who have completed Projects/Initiatives or be an Initiating Officer.

Rules of Engagement: Must have initiated and completed projects/events (teaching a workshop counts towards this – attending one does not). If you were an Officer member previously, you must have completed projects beyond previous Officer member duties to have a current board position. Board members have 3x voting rights. Positions earned not elected.

Officers – Participating members who have committed for at least one semester to position related responsibilities. An Officer has 2x voting rights like an Initiating Member (since both are pledging to complete a set of duties). If an Officer initiates and completes a project beyond their board duties, they can become an Initiating Officer and have 3x voting rights on the board.

Officers:

President
Vice President
VP of Social Media
VP of Finance
VP of Administration
VP of Technology
VP of Data Science
VP of Skill Development
VP of Industry Relations
VP of Curriculum Planning

Rules of Engagement: Must fulfill a set of duties related to the operation of the group. An Officer has 2x voting rights like an Initiating Member (since both are pledging to complete a set of duties). If an Officer initiates and completes a project beyond their board duties, they can become an Initiating Officer and have 3x voting rights on the board.
Officer Positions are elected by board and group votes based on skills related to position and previous involvement with the group. Positions are posted with accompanying descriptions and any participating member can apply by emailing the board of their intention. If more than one person applies, then the board members are emailed a link with an option for an anonymous vote. Each vote is counted 3times and the other members are then sent the anonymous link vote option (1x) with the board vote numbers displayed for endorsement. After the votes by the rest of the group are completed, all votes are added up. Limit for any single unchallenged officer position is 2 years. At that point, the position becomes open for application and voting links are sent out to the membership. An officer position can additionally be challenged after one semester by any participating member. An Officer can apply for another position for which they have not had a post after their term limit is reached.

Initiating members – Any member who initiates a project or initiative with 2 supporting participating members backing them.

Rules of engagement – The project has to be approved/supported by at least 2 board members and has to have milestones and a set timeline/anticipated completion date with clear success measures.
Initiating members have 2x voting rights unless they complete a project/initiative and join the board. Positions are not elected but are created upon board approved project initiation.

Projects are first initiated by emailing the entire board or else the two board members from whom you might receive support. Once 2 board members agree to a project, it gets added to the website by the VP pf Administration Officer. If a project initiator is a board members already, then they only need one other board member to support a project. Once two supporting participating members join the team, the project gets an ‘Active’ status and will remain as such until success measures are evaluated by the board at the proposed deadline. At that point, it will become ‘Completed’, ‘Partially Completed’, or ‘Abandoned’. A ‘Partially Completed’ or ‘Abandoned’ status will open the project up for new leadership and other members can build teams and propose new timelines and success measures.

Participating members – Any member of the CIG list serve who has attended 2+ events or has taken part in at least one project/initiative to completion.
